Homocysteine is an amino acid whose levels are governed by B6, B9, and B12. Raised values are linked to higher cardiovascular and cognitive risk.
Homocysteine is metabolised using B vitamins. When B12 or folate are low, homocysteine builds up. The value is a functional measure of B-vitamin status as well as an independent risk marker.
What does low Homocysteine mean?
Low values are favourable.
What does high Homocysteine mean?
High homocysteine often reflects B12 or folate deficiency and should prompt testing of both.
