Bilirubin is formed when red cells are broken down and processed by the liver. High values can indicate liver disease, bile flow problems, or increased red cell breakdown.

Mildly raised values are common and can reflect Gilbert's syndrome, a hereditary, harmless variant. Jaundice appears at much higher values.

What does low Bilirubin mean?

Low bilirubin is not clinically significant.

What does high Bilirubin mean?

High bilirubin can appear with liver disease, bile flow problems, haemolysis, or Gilbert's syndrome.
